Board of Directors Meetings 03/15/07, 8:00 A.M. Pursuant to the e-mail notification dated March 12, 2007, the regularly scheduled March 22nd Heartland Apartment Association Board of Directors meeting was canceled in favor of a special meeting at the above stated date and time at the HAA offices, 2405 Grand, Suite 106, Kansas City, MO 64108. Board members present were: Doug Price, Lee Harris, Rick Oddo, Jerry Miller, and Jim Bowers. Also present were Mark Funkhouser, Ed Wolf, Dan Morgan, Mike Rainen, Stacey Cosby, Dave Grosdeck, Cindy Wienel, Scott Buescher, Steve Ruttinger, Chad Troutwine and Sam Alpert. (Chris Erdley, Ken Riedemann, Dennis Watts, Bill Charcut, Jim Adams, Ralph Lewis, and Ward Katz, were absent.) Jim Bowers made an opening statement and introductions of all in attendance were made. DISCUSSION W / MARK FUNKHOUSER, KCMO MAYORAL CANDIDATE - Sam Alpert opened the discussion, summarizing a number of key policy concerns shared by those present, and then asked Mark Funkhouser to take the opportunity to inform the group of his approach to serving as mayor of KCMO. Mr. Funkhouser spoke on his governing philosophy with respect to neighborhood revitalization, good and bad taxes, rental regulation, economic development, general fiscal responsibility, and sound public administration. This was followed by an open discussion on concerns of those in attendance. Topics included rental property (over)regulation, business license fee fairness, and the underlying perception of the business community that policy decisions are creating a hostile business and economic development environment. Sam Alpert cited businesses relocating to neighboring municipalities as a cumulative result of KCMO's disregard for its small to medium sized employers. Upon completing this discussion, Mr. Funkhouser and his campaign assistant, Ed Wolf, expressed their appreciation and they departed the meeting. Sam Alpert asked that those remaining share their opinions of the candidate, recognizing that time was growing short with only twelve days left until the general election. After considerable discussion, it was decided that the HAA would support Mr. Funkhouser for Mayor, as well as naming a full slate of city council members (based on our current best assessment of the result of each race). Another special meeting of the HAA Board (to meet with 4th district at-large candidate Doug Gamble) was scheduled for March 22nd. Sam Alpert urged as many as possible to attend. The next regularly scheduled meeting of the HAA Board of Directors will be April 26, 2007. There being no further business to come before the Board, the meeting was adjourned at approximately 10:00 a.m. | |
