CURRENT LEGISLATIVE REPORTS

July 1999 HAA Legislative Activity Report:

Subsequent to the HAA Board meeting of 6/24/99, at which time Larry Winn and Chase Simmons briefed those present, Mr. Winn has attempted to arrange an informational meeting with O.P. city council members- Michael Lally and Jack Halligan, as well as other key city staff members. As there have been a number of distracting high priority issues before the city council in recent weeks, a written communication from Larry Winn to the respective council members (attached) requesting an early August meeting was mailed on July 23rd. It is our intent to try to meet with O.P. officials prior to the August Community Development Committee.

Meanwhile there appears to be some interest on the part of Lawrence, KS to begin discussions with respect to regulating rental units in that community. Jerry Miller has communicated our interest in the issue to the Lawrence Apartment Association.

Kansas City, MO has undertaken a local "Keep America Beautiful" city wide anti-litter campaign. The HAA was invited to participate in the "Keep It Clean Summit" which was held July 20th at the Kauffman Legacy Park. Most of K.C.’s major business and institutional communities were represented in the daylong conference. The thrust of the meeting was to build a platform on which to launch a broad based community initiative. As a part of this effort, it is anticipated that there will be another curbside recycling ballot issue in April, 2000.
